CQII Advanced Trainings

CQII Advanced Trainings involve three phrases:
  1. Pre-Work Phase (5–6-hour time commitment). Accepted participants are asked to complete surveys, activities and training modules relevant to the training they will be attending. Results are used to tailor the training content for participants.
  2. In-Person Session Phase (46+ hours). Participants attend a 3-day interactive skills-building workshop. Features include hands-on, real-world exercises; training to address pre-work assessment strengths and challenges as part of a forward-looking Personal Improvement Plan (PIP); and peer support in work with three other study group partners.
  3. Post-Work Phase (12-16 hours). Monthly telephone or by email exchanges with study group partners focus on completion of brief assignments. Graduates also take part in routine conference calls facilitated by staff and consultants.

CQII Training of Trainers Program

Simply knowing quality improvement (QI) well is not sufficient for being able to teach others in the field. The Center for Quality Improvement and Innovation (CQII) has recognized the need to expand the pool of trainers available to train recipients of all Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) Parts to meet the RWHAP requirements.

In response to this need, CQII offers a national Training-of-Trainers (TOT) Program to build capacity for QI among quality managers. The overarching goals of the TOT program include:

  • Enlarge the pool of qualified trainers on QI in HIV care across the country.
  • Further, spread QI concepts by increasing the number of training opportunities for RWHAP recipients.
  • Increase the ability of CQII to refer requests for QI training to regional TOT trainers.
  • Build capacity in RWHAP-funded programs on quality improvement.

Program Benefits

The TOT Program is designed for those individuals with a strong experiential background in QI and provides participants exposure to adult learning theories and available training resources. TOT graduates plan engaging and effective workshops while linking them with quality improvement experts and peers facing similar challenges. Before attending the rigorous face-to-face TOT session, a participant is asked to complete the prework, which includes online learning, readings of available quality publications, and participation in two conference calls.

Since the purpose of the TOT Program is capacity building, participants are asked to lead at least three trainings within 120 days of completing the session. This helps participants reinforce the knowledge they gained at the TOT as well as expanding the opportunities for providers of clinical and non-clinical services to gain quality management knowledge and expertise.

Training of Quality Leaders Program (TQL)

RWHAP agencies face challenges in leading QI activities, including unfamiliarity with QI concepts, staff resistance to engage them in QI projects, and a lack of team facilitation skills. The Training of Quality Leaders (TQL) Program aims to build the expertise and facilitation skills of quality managers and those who direct quality management programs to effectively lead and facilitate QI activities.

Program Benefits

The benefits of successful TQL Program completion include:

  • Increased confidence and mastery in facilitating QI teams and in effectively managing quality improvement-related meetings in HIV care environments.
  • Identification of leadership behaviors to lead an effective QM program and better understand their implications to lead QI activities.
  • Exposure to QI experts with practical knowledge and experience and to a network of peers with hands-on experiences.
  • Clear understanding of TQL Program expectations and planning of post-TQL action steps.

CQII Training on Coaching Basics (TCB) Program

The CQII Training on Coaching Basics (TCB) Program offers training to QI leaders to build their capacity to coach other HIV providers to better their QI programs. The aim of TCB is to increase the pool of competent QI managers across all Parts of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) and build regional and recipient-wide capacity for QI. Trained individuals would join a pool of expert HIV Improvement Coaches across the country, available to impart QI training to other RWHAP agencies. The anticipated outcome of these efforts: better HIV care across the entire RWHAP care continuum.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

TCB provides training to staff in RWHAP-funded agencies who manage existing quality management programs. In selecting applicants, TCB prioritizes those individuals who are charged in assisting other agencies within their HIV/AIDS network with advancing their quality management programs and QI activities. Prospective participants are expected to have successfully graduated from the Training-of-Trainer (TOT) Program or Training of Quality Leaders (TQL) Program.

Benefits for Participants

Successful graduates would become QI Coaches and would experience the following benefits:

  • Increased mastery of effectively coaching HIV providers and/or groups of HIV providers to establish and sustain effective quality management programs and quality improvement teams.
  • Enhanced ability to conduct organizational assessments, provide constructive feedback, and develop effective action plans based on assessment findings.
  • Improved confidence to understand behaviors and interventions that promote a systems approach to QI using partnerships and shared vision, and to address resistance and conflict of individuals and groups to achieve agreed objectives.
  • Improved self-awareness of individual coaching style and of personal working style and limitations that may contribute to interpersonal tensions.
  • Increased understanding of different approaches to maintain team motivation while building self-reliance.
  • Increased sophistication in addressing the tension between contract monitoring and coaching to improve HIV care since these functions often reside in the same office.
